Long-time and much-loved Orinda Rotarian Dick Burkhalter passed away peacefully earlier this month after a courageous battle with cancer. Before he passed, club members were able to include him in a special tribute meeting to honor his service and to share memories about his many contributions to Rotary and to Orinda. Club President, Ken Jew, surprised Dick by naming him "Orinda Rotarian of the Decade" and by announcing that henceforth, the annual Rotarian of the Year award will be named in Dick's honor. Following his passing, the Orinda Theatre marquee was dedicated to his memory. Dick was the quintessential Rotarian and embodied Rotary's motto, "Service Above Self."
